I chose to come to Xavier because of the history of it’s premed biology program. I plan to become a pediatrician when I’m done with school. Xavier is number 1 when it comes to putting African americans into medical school. I knew that if I came to Xavier that I will have a better chance of getting into medical school if I came to Xavier. I also chose Xavier because of its location is in New Orleans. New Orleans is a very different and exciting city that has a lot to offer when it comes to having fun. The food is great here. I love the fact that I can go to any corner and find great seafood! The music is even better. The second lines and the jazz bands are always playing no matter what time of the day or night it is. Even though New Orleans has suffered because of hurricane Katrina I believe that it has a lot of life left. Xavier is the main reason I’m here and I know it has the most to offer me when it comes to being successful in life.
Challanges I think college will provide Sunday, Sep 28 2008
Uncategorized 4:24 pm
I think that college will provide a lot of organization and time management problems. This is because there are days when I will have a certain amount of classes. Some days I will have plenty and some days I will have very few. I will have to learn when to allot time to study and time to relax. If I’m not careful I will end up with late assignments and poor grades. Being unorganized will cause me to forget my class meetings and assignments. I will have to get a planner and right everything down in order for me to remember things; mental notes are not affective for me. I know that I will have more problems while I’m here at Xavier such as interacting with other students and learning the material. I really don’t have to have friends to make me happy so I’m not concerned with friends but I know that I will have to interact with people. I know that learning the material will be very difficult and will be the biggest challange for me. As long as I manage my time right and put my class work first, i shouldn’t have any problems.

In chapter 3 Piazza described the Mardi Gras Indians and their outfits and songs. His first encounter with the music of the Mardi Gras Indians was when he was back in New York at a friends house. His friend was playing music that he had never heard before. Heavy saxophone and trombones and raspy voices chanting things that didnt make any sense to him. He finally found out what this was, it was the sounds of Mardi Gras. When he came to New Orleans he saw the costumes and Indians for himself and he was in total shock. he described the loud pink, purple, lime green and blue feathered head gear and outfits that the indians wore.
In chapter 4 Piazza discussed his experience at the heritage and jazz festival that New Orleans has been hosting since 1970. For eight hours a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; eight to nine stages set up and play jazz, gospel, blues, cajun, and rock music. He talks about the food that you were surre to enjoy at the festival. Piazza brings special attention to the cochon de lait (suckling pig) or po’ boy, a sandwich served on fench bread.

Chapters 1 and 2 WNOM Sunday, Sep 28 2008

Chapters 1 and 2 Of WNOM in my opinion were mainly about music and food. Piazza introduced New Orleans as a place that he had first visited in his imagination. Since he was from New York, he could only imagine what it was like until he came here back in 1987. He came to the Jazz and Heritage festival that he had been longing to come to for years. He settled in a guest house, rented a bike and started to explore the city. He noticed the second line bands and all of the jazz musicians that played on street corners. I could tell that the music really captured him from the way he described the sound and of excitement of the music. Piazza rode for miles each day observing the sights and sounda of New Orleans.
The first meal that Piazza ate was at this high uprise house located on a corner of a neighborhood. Surprisingly he enjoyed it despite its location. He described the fried trout and greens as being so good, that he came back for breakfast the next morning. In chapters 1 and 2 Piazza was already falling in love with the city, but he was especially happy with the food and the music of New Orleans.
why i chose to come to Xavier! Thursday, Sep 25 2008
Your first Xavier experience 10:59 pm
The reason why i chose to come to Xavier University was to fufil my hopes and dreams i becoming a pharmacist. Actually, pharamacy wasnt my first choice in my career, but i have decided to do it for my family. I believe it might be easier for me to become a pharmacist than a ordthodontist. Now Xavier is the school for me, and im really happy i chosed to come here, i have met so many different people and became friends with them. I hope to finish all my pharmacy years at Xavier. So, i guess this is the reason why i chose Xavier, to become a pharmacist and to begin my career.

I wanted to pick a college that had good premedical programs, but it had to be close to the city. My choices were narrowed down to either Tulane or Xavier. I did like Tulane’s campus over Xavier’s campus. The extra distance was of no importance to me. Both school have notable premed programs. I had ended up choosing Xavier over Tulane
The main reason why I had picked Xavier over Tulane was the difference in price for tuition, which is a ridiculous large amount. I had also received a hefty scholarship from Xavier, which makes the difference even more outrageous. I also have much more friends already attending Xavier than Tulane and due to the size of the school I would be able to easier make friends at Xavier than Tulane.
Why I choose to go to Xavier? Wednesday, Sep 24 2008
Your first Xavier experience 6:37 pm
My reason to go to Xavier? Well I want to be a Pharmaciest, like most people that attend Xavier. I heard that Xavier is a great Pharmacy college and when I actually finish pre-pharm and set off to a Pharmacy College, I could just stay back and hopefully get enrolled into the Pharmacy program. The tuition and other prices to attend Xavier, I thought, is pretty cheap compared to other private colleges. Anyways, Xavier offered me a scholorship for $6000 and some grants, with the addition of TOPS and other scholorships, so that took care of pretty much everything. Yeah I’m pretty much going to Xavier for free, awesome yes? Also, Xavier is about 15 minutes ( no traffic that is..). I have three cousins attending Xavier, so I have someone to show me around and know what classes to take. Then I have a few friends that are attending Xavier with me. Though only three of the five that came with me from high school is pre-pharm major, at least I know I have a few people to talk to if I’m having trouble. Xavier doesn’t have that reputation as being a “party school”, so I know I’ll be able to concentrate more on school work rather than losing control and such. In high school, I’ve been to Xavier for a fieldtrip, and from what I saw, the university seems to have a relaxing enviornment. Then there’s the library. Instead of having to find a library around my area, I could just stay back at Xavier and use the library to study, work on homework, and research.
Chapter 1&2 of WNOM Monday, Sep 22 2008
Your first Xavier experience 12:27 am
After reading chapter 1 and 2 of “Why New Orleans Matters” I personally feel that Tom Piazza had compose a strong point of view in his book about New Orleans; whether it was before or after his visit of New Orleans. the main point in the story that capture my eye after reading chapter 1 and 2 were how Tom Piazza pictures New Orleans as a place where “ graying black-and-white pictures of men with musical instruments…. The streets were lined with wooden frame house, and little shops and bars with names like Luthjen’s, Big 25, Mama Lou’s” before he even visit New Orleans. The story began to develop a slight change after he visit New Orleans for the first time. What shock me the most is that the first impression that he mention in the story is how the air smelled different! “It felt more like a liquid than like air.” What is he trying to say? That New Orleans is polluted and New York is not? After visiting New Orleans, Tom describes New Orleans Street as an “extremely active street life and sidewalk life”, it is kind of similar to what he had imaging before. Another point that captures my eye is what Tom Piazza mentions in chapter 1 and 2 about how Foods, Music’s, and Religions structured New Orleans. In the story, he describes different type of restaurants and music’s. He also makes a long description of New Orleans traditional funeral. Tom Piazza also mention about Hurricane Katrina and how most of the restaurants that he mention in the book was destroyed by hurricane Katrina.
Challenge of college Tuesday, Sep 16 2008
Your first Xavier experience 6:55 pm
The challenge I think that college will provide is to keep your own tack of what you are doing in class. College is much more differing from high school. For example, when I was in high school, my teacher force us (as a class) to do our homework, class work, projects, and study for tests and quizzes. Now in college, professors in college are differing from high school teacher; they don’t force us like high school teacher does. We (as a young adult) can decide whether or not to complete an assignment. Another challenge that I believe college will provide is to take notes in class. Sometime the professor lecture or goes over a lesson to fast that I don’t even have time or know what to write down. It is very difficult for me because I believe that I am still a high school student trying to get adapt to college lifestyle. I personally believe that walking from the NFC Academic Science Complex building to Xavier South is a challenge for me also. Usually, I do not walk a lot but now I have to walk back and forth from the NFC Academic Science Complex building to Xavier South. The most challenge part about this situation is that sometime I only have ten minute to walk from one class to another. For example, I get out of my General Chemistry I class at 12:50 p.m. in the NFC Academic Science Complex building and my next class (Sociology) begins at 1:00 p.m. in Xavier South building.
Why I chose Xavier Tuesday, Sep 16 2008
Your first Xavier experience 6:17 pm
The reason why I chose to come to Xavier is because it is the only college that has Pharmacy school in New Orleans. If I go to another college, I will have to transfer to Xavier anyway once I finish pre-pharmacy. By being in Xavier, I will have the advantage of getting in Pharmacy school easier because I am a student member of Xavier University. I also chose to go to Xavier because it is a small campus compares to other University, and it would be easier for me to fit in. Another reason I chose to come to Xavier because it is near my house and very convenient for me to drive back and forth. I am a weak driver, and it is very nerve-racking for me to drive far. I was thinking about living in the University dome but I decide not to do so. First of all, I’m very close with my family and I know that I will be homesick if I live in the University dome. Second, even though I am 18 now, I personally believe that I am not ready to be an adult yet; I need to stay with my parents. Third, I know that I can not take care of myself if I move out and become independent. It is sad to admit, but I don’t know how to cooks, organizes, or cleans. That is why I prefer to stay home so that my mom can help me; instead of stressing out with cooking, organizing, or cleaning, I can use those extra times to spend on my school work.
